Kitchen Island

This was an add-on to our spacious kitchen in Pagosa.  Even with all the space we found ourselves crossing paths quite frequently.  We thought that a center island might control traffic better (like a round-a-bout) and provide some additional counter space.  We have subsequently found this to be a great addition, providing a central prep and staging area, while reserving other counter space for specific tasks (e.g., dishes, oven staging, etc.).  One plus was a perfect surface for Johnny to make her superb pizza dough — yum!    This also provided an opportunity to create some customized “spice drawers” designed to accommodate the various sizes of spice contaniers.  That feature really makes this a wonderful convenience.
It is made out of “rustic oak”, that is, with knotholes and imperfections.  This had to match in wood and finish the existing kitchen cabinets.  We think it does.  We finished it off with a granite top from a local firm — just the thing for making bread, pizza dough, and other tasty pastries.
